Major time-travel TV drama Outlander to be filmed on location in Scotland

Major TV drama Outlander will be filmed on location in Scotland from September 2013 and will use retrofitted studio facilities in Glasgow. Based on novels by Diana Gabaldon, the story involves time travel between events in Scotland in the 18th Century and in World War II.

“Scotland is widely recognised for its world-class talent, crews and facilities, as well as its fantastic locations,” offers Caroline Parkinson, Creative Director at Creative Scotland: “This, alongside the UK’s recent introduction of high-end TV drama tax incentives, is helping to make Scotland an even more attractive proposition for further inward investment."

“Providing opportunities to develop current skills and training, the filming will serve to strengthen Scotland’s filming provision infrastructure through the creation of the Outlander studio space, as well as associated workshop and production facilities,” she adds.

In late 2012, Creative Scotland allocated funds for the development of a full studio facility in Glasgow. This is ongoing but is separate from the retrofitted studio facilities that will be used for Outlander. The series has a 16-episode order and will be produced for the Starz network and Sony Pictures Television by Left Bank Pictures, Tall Ship Productions and Story Mining & Supply Company.
