Modern Family TV comedy to film holiday episode on location in Australia
Hit Los Angeles-based comedy show Modern Family is to film a holiday episode on location in Australia. Twentieth Century Fox Television has made an agreement with airline Qantas to fly the cast out for two weeks of location filming that could help boost local film tourism.
“We look forward to a fantastic shoot in many exotic locations,” said series co-creator and executive producer Steven Levitan: “We loved the family vacation episodes we shot in Hawaii and Wyoming – this one is certainly our most ambitious yet.
“We promise to feature a kangaroo, a koala and a boomerang. I'm sure there will be lots more, but so far that's all we know about Australia – our American school system is a disaster. So we thank Qantas for this amazing opportunity to broaden our horizons. Plus it'll be nice to go to a place where everyone looks like Hugh Jackman and Miranda Kerr. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!”
“As the leading carrier between Australia and the US, Qantas will not only bring the highest level of expertise in travel for our production - they are also bringing a great amount of creativity to the overall partnership,” added Jeffrey Godsick, president of Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products.
Qantas made a similar deal last year for an episode of popular US programme The Ellen DeGeneres Show to film in Australia and the airline claims the move had a big impact on increasing inbound flights to New South Wales.
Modern Family is a critical and commercial hit and follows the everyday lives of three branches of an extended family in Los Angeles. As one of America’s top comedy shows, it could be a hugely effective promotional tool for Australia and producers will be choosing the specific filming locations in the coming weeks.
