New action drama series The Librarians to film on location in Oregon
Cable channel TNT will film drama series The Librarians on location in Oregon in the Pacific Northwest. The miniseries will follow on from a successful TV movie franchise in the vein of Indiana Jones that follows an ancient organisation of librarians who recover historical artefacts.
“The Librarian movies have been a huge success for TNT and we jumped at the opportunity to build a series around the incredible world [that Executive Producer] Dean Devlin and his creative partners created,” said Michael Wright, President and Head of Programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM).
Oregon is a popular TV filming location and has hosted series including Grimm and Dean Devlin’s own long-running action drama Leverage, also for TNT. The state offers a 20% filming incentive as a cash rebate for locally-bought goods and services, and also a rebate of up to 16.5% on crew wages.
The Librarian TV movie franchise began in 2004 with Quest for the Spear and continued in 2006 with Return to King Solomon’s Mines. Curse of the Judas Chalice was launched in 2008. All three scored high cable ratings. Filming locations moved from Mexico to South Africa and then to Louisiana, which has been one of the top production hubs in the US for several years.
New York has been the most popular North American city for TV pilots this season, according to a Deadline report, partly as a result of its generous filming incentive programme. Los Angeles and Vancouver took joint-second place.
Overseas filming has been less common for US pilots this year, although some have filmed selected scenes internationally in order to establish their settings more effectively.
