Stephen King TV pilot Under the Dome films on location in North Carolina

Television pilot Under the Dome has started filming on location in North Carolina. The Stephen King story follows a small town’s struggles when a huge transparent dome inexplicably seals it off from the outside world. Filming will take place partly at EUE/Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington.

Although Under the Dome is set in Maine in the north-east corner of the US, North Carolina’s combination of filming tax credits and suitable locations were more practical for the producers, reports the LA Times.

"You're limited by the amount of money that you have, so that's really critical. Every penny is important,” Executive Producer Neal Baer told the outlet: “We wanted it to be Anywhere, USA. North Carolina really works for that. We need forest, we need a small town and we need water - we have all that.”

“We're really excited,” North Carolina Film Office Director Aaron Syrett told the outlet: “It speaks to North Carolina's attractiveness as a film location and to the quality of its crews and infrastructure.”

Steven Spielberg is an Executive Producer on Under the Dome, which is filming on location in the local towns of Southport and Burgaw, as well as at EUE/Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington. North Carolina was also chosen for the first season of high-profile dystopian drama Revolution, while multi-award-winning TV drama Homeland films in and around Charlotte.
