North Carolina’s EUE/Screen Gem Studios to host Iron Man 3 from May
Marvel Studios will start filming Iron Man 3 in North Carolina in May. Shooting is scheduled from May to September, using EUE/Screen Gem Studios as a base. It took a full year of negotiations to secure the shoot, with Michigan, New Mexico and Georgia all originally in contention.
Aaron Syrett, Director of the North Carolina Film Office, previously spent nearly a decade as Director of the Utah Film Commission, during which time he worked with Disney – Marvel’s parent company – on more than 30 different projects. He had a long list of contacts when he moved to North Carolina and tracking Marvel productions in development led to a meeting with executives in Los Angeles in the spring of 2011.
We spoke [to Marvel and Disney executives] about specific [future] projects, North Carolina’s infrastructure (crew, equipment, stages), incentives and locations.

Syrett told the Greater Wilmington Business Journal: “There were about ten to 12 Marvel and Disney executives in the meeting. We spoke about specific [future] projects, North Carolina’s infrastructure (crew, equipment, stages), incentives and locations.”
Marvel scouted Charlotte and Wilmington in July 2011, before confirming their intentions a few weeks later. Iron Man 3 could create 500 production jobs in-state and deliver USD80 million locally. North Carolina offers a 25% filming tax credit for eligible productions.
