North Carolina could gain new studio if filming incentives remain generous

North Carolina could gain a new studio if it keeps its generous location filming incentives on a long-term basis. Wilmington’s EUE/Screen Gems Studios is currently North Carolina’s main filming facility.

Charlotte’s former shopping centre the Eastland Mall spans 81 acres and has been earmarked as a potential studio development. Two film companies have said public money would be needed and that success would hinge on the state’s commitment to its filming incentives.

Film Studio Group was one of the companies to evaluate the proposal, according to the Charlotte Observer: “We believe the city can certainly support film facilities - in fact a ‘next generation’ production campus – if state tax incentives remain stable.”

Wilmington’s EUE/Screen Gems Studios (above) hosted Marvel’s Iron Man 3 earlier this year. North Carolina’s generous 25% filming incentive is confirmed through to January 2015, but its long-term future is less certain.
