Period TV show builds sound stages while filming on location in Miami

New 50s-set TV show Magic City built its own sound stages on location in Miami to make room for a huge hotel set. The city offers several studio facilities, but none were large enough for the show’s purposes.

Magic City begins in April on US network Starz and is inspired by the Miami youth of writer-producer Mitch Glazer, the Miami Herald reports. Other Miami-set TV shows like Dexter and even CSI: Miami actually film in Los Angeles, but Glazer wanted to base his production in the Florida city.

If I had a billionaire friend, I’d tell them to build a proper soundstage facility in Miami, because film productions will definitely come.

Glazer told the outlet: “If I had a billionaire friend, I’d tell them to build a proper soundstage facility in Miami, because film productions will definitely come. We ended up at Bertram, which isn’t soundproof, but we made do.

“If some wealthy investment guy built a facility in Wynwood, where there’s a lot of property available and all these great restaurants, it would become something really great.”

Despite the absence of Dexter and CSI: Miami, the city is popular for filmmaking. Last year the Tom Cruise musical epic Rock of Ages doubled the city for a period Los Angeles, recreating the Sunset Strip of the 1980s.
