Pinewood Studios to consult on future plans

Pinewood Studios in the UK has announced a consultation on its future development. Discussions about the next 20 years of the studios’ future will be held both with stakeholders and industry professionals, as the company decides how to offer the best facilities and stay globally competitive.

The studios attracted many major Hollywood productions to deliver a strong 2011, but executives are conscious of having to continually compete with facilities in places like South Africa, Melbourne and now China.

Ivan Dunleavy is Pinewood’s Chief Executive: “Our business again delivered record operating results during 2011, yet Pinewood and the UK were unable to satisfy the rising demand last year from the audio-visual sector. We must respond effectively to the growing demand and compete on an equal footing; otherwise Pinewood will fall behind its international competitors.”

Pinewood has had a tough time with recent development plans, suffering a planning permission refusal for ‘Project Pinewood’ earlier this year. The GBP200 million development would have involved the building of new sets, homes and a village community for film workers.

The new 30,000 square-foot Richard Attenborough stage was formally opened in April 2012.
