Producer of Children of Men and The A Team becomes Chair of British Film Commission

Iain Smith, a Producer with 40 years of experience whose credits include Children of Men, The A Team and Wanted, has been appointed Chair of the British Film Commission. The agency is now responsible for attracting international feature productions to the UK.

Smith said: “It is essential that we continue to successfully compete for an increased share of the international film production market. Our film infrastructure across the UK is the envy of the world, but in changing times it must be sustained, informed and supported by awareness and strategic intervention at the sharp end of the wider international business. That will be the primary function of the British Film Commission’s new Advisory Board.”

Our film infrastructure across the UK is the envy of the world, but in changing times it must be sustained, informed and supported by awareness and strategic intervention at the sharp end of the wider international business.

According to figures from Film London, inward investment features filming in the UK throughout 2010 generated nearly GBP1 billion, an increase of 15% from 2009. Major productions filmed in 2010 included Captain America: The First Avenger and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The sequel to 2010’s Clash of the Titans is currently filming on seven stages at Shepperton Studios.

Nick Smith, Commercial Director at Pinewood, said: “The combination of stage space, infrastructure, skills and the favourable fiscal incentives in the UK means Pinewood and Shepperton remain an attractive destination for filmmaking. [Clash sequel Wrath of the Titans] is now in full swing and we wish the talented cast and crew every success.”
