Terra Nova director discusses ‘adventure’ of location filming in Australia

Alex Graves has talked about the ‘adventure’ of directing the pilot of Terra Nova in Australia in the tail-end of 2010. Executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, the show tells the story of a family in the future who travel back in time to prehistoric Earth.

The show’s opening episodes were filmed throughout Australia’s Gold Coast, Brisbane and Queensland. Speaking at the recent Wonder-Con event in San Francisco, Graves said: “Everyday on Terra Nova instead of coming to stage 12 on the lot to shoot your scene, I’d watch the cast being driven in to this incredible environment and it would be like being in the Cretaceous Period. I got such a kick out of that because it was like you were on location in Terra Nova filming the show and you don’t get that very much in television.”

He added: “The downside is that in the middle of rehearsal I would take a leech off an actress’ foot! Or there would be so much rain that we would have a flood and we’d have to build a bridge to get back to Terra Nova. Little things like that. But it was an adventure.”

Although originally scheduled for a May 2011 preview, the opening episodes have been pushed back to autumn 2011. Delays on the cutting-edge visual effects have been cited as the main reason.
