Trafalgar Square closed down for Wonder Woman filming

Trafalgar Square was closed on Sunday morning as filming took place for the upcoming superhero film, Wonder Woman. Roads leading into the square were closed off until 10:30am as the set transformed the area to mimic the City of London during the First World War. Onlookers were able to see cars and vintage clothing from the early 20^th century.

Due to its central location, filming at Trafalgar Square is no easy task as it requires multiple lock-offs and approval from a number of different administrations. Tom Cruise’s science fiction film Edge of Tomorrow also filmed at the location back in 2012, with the star himself being flown in by helicopter.

Edge of Tomorrow’s Producer, Erwin Stoff previously explained: “this was a really significant feat and has been a huge undertaking. We have had tremendous co-operation from the council and the Mayor’s Office. London is a very film-friendly city.”

This shoot comes only days after it was announced that portions of Wonder Woman would be filmed in locations throughout Italy, namely Castel Del Monte and Matera, the latter of which saw the high budget remake Ben Hur film on location there.

James Bond’s Spectre also went to similar lengths whilst filming on the River Thames. The film’s Supervising Location Manager, Emma Pill was required to give notice to a thousand residences along the Thames to secure permission for the shoot.

Filming in the UK provides productions with access to a 25% tax rebate, on the basis that they incur a minimum spend of 10% within the country and either pass a cultural test or officially register as a coproduction.
