High-end television shows with movie-scale production values are commanding large audiences, but what impact does this have on local industries and is it a long-term trend?
Darlow Smithson Productions (DSP) will return to the historic Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire, northern England, to film a second series of period drama The Mill. The new series will move forward in the mill’s history and chart the lives of workers from the late 1830s.
New fantasy film The Moon and the Sun will film on location in Victoria, Australia, in 2014. The movie is based on a novel from Vonda McIntyre and tells a story of King Louis XIV of France capturing a mermaid to steal its life force.
British police drama series Vera has filmed on location in Newcastle and in Northumberland in the north-east of England for its fourth season. The show follows Brenda Blethyn’s Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope as she works cases in the area.

Satellite broadcaster Sky will work with Element Pictures and Company Pictures to film a two-part television adaptation of period smuggling tale Moonfleet on location in Ireland. The novel was published in 1898 and is set in Dorset in the south of England.
Ashford Film Studios in Ireland could be expanded to help boost the country’s location filming appeal. Situated in County Wicklow near Dublin, the studio already offers three stages - the largest of which is 28,400 square feet - and it hosts hit TV show Vikings.
Hit period drama Ripper Street has returned to Dublin for location filming following another series commission from the BBC. The second season is set in the 1890s, with the Irish capital once again doubling for Victorian London.
