The Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) and BAFTA have co-hosted a panel discussion in London on how UK producers can get the most out of Ireland’s boosted filming incentives. Major productions filmed in the Dublin area have included Ripper Street and Vikings.
For some it may come as a surprise to hear that the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MOD) has been providing film locations for many years. It’s well placed to do so as the MOD is one of the country’s largest landowners.
Kate Winslet has completed production on Australian comedy feature The Dressmaker. Filming was based at Dockland Film Studios in Melbourne, Victoria, and also filmed on location across the south-east Australian state.
Cable channel Syfy has committed to an extended slate of location filming in Australia. Television dramas Hunters and Childhood’s End are both scheduled to shoot in Melbourne, using Docklands Studios as a base.
A new TV drama version of the classic Jekyll and Hyde story is set to film in India and London from early next year. The series is from UK network ITV, which recently commissioned The Chronicles of Frankenstein, featuring former Game of Thrones star Sean Bean.
Ardmore Studios near Dublin is set to help establish a new film facility in the city of Limerick in western Ireland. The plan is to adapt existing industrial spaces in the city to emulate the success of Northern Ireland’s production industry, which has grown around Game of Thrones.
A host of new drama commissions has been announced by the BBC, many of which will be planning to film on location in the UK. The commissions include a new miniseries of the hit crime drama Luther, which will shoot in London.
Location filming for Angelina Jolie’s World War II biopic Unbroken and Dwayne Johnson’s earthquake drama San Andreas has helped boost Australia’s international production spending by 50% in 2013/14. Altogether, Australia hosted nine foreign features and two foreign TV dramas.
